China Poot Bay

One fine morning Cousin Priscilla invited us to join her on an excursion across Kachemak Bay to China Poot Bay (lots of bays around here) for salmon fishing. Sadly, Priscilla's nickname is Nokatchemfish and hence, we caught no fish. But, we had tons of fun none the less.

We arrived at low tide and got to play on the mud flats for hours and explore many new and interesting things.

THE MISADVENTURE OF SHERRIE...
SO, Sherrie decided to go chasing after a crab and into a sink-hole she fell. Now, as she was wearing her trusty rain boots this shouldn't have been a problem, but of course it was just deep enough to completely immerse her boots in the hole. And as if it couldn't get any worse, she let the crab escape!

Sherrie's Bare and Wet Feet

To aid in the drying of Sherrie's socks, P.K. and Page volunteered to build a fire. What follows are the documentaries of our time on the shores of China Poot.

WebCam Fun

So... As a way to pass time we have discovered that the laptop camera can offer hours of fun. This too has been discovered by my cousin P.K. for one day I was playing on my laptop and found this video. It was so cute that I just had to find  the perfect song and ... now we have this gem of a video. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do!

North to Alaska

Day 4 through Day 5: After 10 hours of blissful sleep, but suffering from mosquito bites and frozen toes, we left Watson Lake, Yukon Territory.

Destination: Anchorage, AK then to Homer, AK.

We left Watson Lake, YT, Canada pretty late in the morning, around 10am, mostly because we were so exhausted from the day before. Luckily, we felt so refreshed and well-rested the next morning that we felt like we could drive to Brazil if we wanted to! But we didn’t want to wander too far away from our original goal: get to Homer, Alaska. After driving for a few hours we hit our first stop of the day, which was the capital of the YT, Whitehorse. We decided to have a long leisurely lunch at a cute little restaurant. There we met some really nice people. It was such a cool town with cool people. I loved it!

After we left the restaurant and Amanda got some much needed caffeine we continued our journey. So we drove and drove and then drove some more. Once we reached the Alaskan/U.S. border we took some cheesy, but totally necessary, pictures. I found out that during road trips you get a really good feeling on what people are like. That’s kind of a good feeling and I am so glad we had this opportunity to do this.

Anyways, after we were about a couple of hours away from Anchorage, we were both completely exhausted seeing how we were pulling another all-nighter. So we pulled over and slept for a couple of hours. I sprawled out on the front seat, which was terribly uncomfortable, and Amanda slept on top of the luggage in the back.  After a little sleep, we hit the road again while Amanda slept on the luggage still.

We got out of Anchorage and I couldn’t keep my eyes open any longer. So Amanda drove and I slept in the back on top of the luggage, which was much nicer than I thought it would be. I tell ya, it was the best sleep I had got in the car since the beginning of the trip. We didn’t really get sick of the driving until this last night. But only a few hours later we landed in our destination: Homer!!!

After a visit with Manda’s aunt and the rest of her relatives, much needed showers, and much needed sleep, we sit here eating ice cream about to embark on the next month and a half of our lives here. We are able to stay in a two-bedroom house for free next to her aunt and uncle’s house. It just needs a cleaning, which we are so grateful and blessed for. Now, all we need is to find jobs.

I guess that’s all for this blog. I do want to say thank you for all of our friends and family who have supported us, worried about us, prayed for us, and let us stay with them. YOU GUYS ROCK!!!

Of Moose and Men

Day Two through Three: It was a late start after breakfast (Thanks Jessica!) and a quick stop at Target (not quick enough for Sherrie).

Destination: Prince George, BC

We had a bit of a late start today, but this was due to a very enjoyable reason. Sherrie and I found her nieces and nephew too adorable to leave.

(Sherrie completing the entry now) After we left John and Jessica’s house and did all the stuff we needed to get through the day like checking the tires, getting gas, and getting junk-food from Target we left for Canada. The north/central part of Washington is absolutely gorgeous. After a scenic route through Washington we got to the Canadian border and entered British Columbia, Canada. Unfortunately, we forgot that Canada has their own currency and goes by the metric system (like every other country in the world does). But when I asked a waitress what type of currency Canada does use, she looked at me like I may have been on something not to mention Amanda lost her sweater there too. Anyways, as I digress, it really wasn’t any big deal, just a little adjusting.

Like Washington, Canada is also very beautiful. We actually went through one area that looked like a desert which felt like home (haha).  We were going to camp outside of Prince George but we didn’t get to the campsite early enough, so we got some dinner and decided to go straight to the Yukon instead of sleeping. After a few hours go by you realize how big B.C. is because of all the endless driving. I guess that’s why they call it a Road Trip, eh! We saw so many different animals that you would pretty much expect to see like: moose, bears, mountain sheep, and deer. The moose actually freaked me out at first because of all the horror stories you hear about those crazy animals. Also, I didn’t want them to run into us or vice-versa. I wasn’t too worried about the bears because my dad gave me some handy-dandy bear deterrent along with three canisters of mace just in case we were attacked by a bear or some psycho-killer man more than once.

So day two merged into day three at the same time the happy attitudes merged to a little bit of crankiness. But after we got our campsite in Watson Lake, Yukon we ate and got our four dollar showers that washed all the crankiness away. We went to the sign forest in Watson Lake where there are over 65,000 sign posts from all around the world. Coincidentally enough there was a sign posted from Taft, CA. dating back from 1994. I found it within the first five minutes of being there. I’d say it was a pretty cool moment. Yeah you betcha. This was basically our last two days, which are still a little bit of a blur, but a good blur. Until next time.

(Sorry this blog was as long as a novel, but it was two whole days ya know and my fingers are long-windedJ).

Day 3 Video Diary

Life is a highway...a very long highway

Flory and Estill: Two college graduates with no jobs, no prospects and fleeing to Alaska.

Day One: And we’re off! After an all-nighter for myself and Sherrie only getting 3 hours of sleep our trip began at 5:00 am

Destination: Puyallup, WA

The day included: Two state borders, 1 taco Bell break, 1 broken iPod adaptor, the beautiful scenery of the Pacific Northwest and 17 hours of driving, driving, and more driving. We are still friends (for now) after a lengthy period in close confinement. We have found our iPods to be a necessity and when the adaptor ceased to work we made an immediate stop at Fred Meyers in Medford, OR in search of a replacement.

North to Alaska

Hello all! Sherrie and Amanda here. This blog chronicles our journey from Taft, California to Homer, Alaska, our stay in Alaska, and our journey back to California. Our stories and lives might be a little goofy sometimes, but this is our new adventure and we wanted it to share it with you. Yes you! We'll try to keep this blog as informative and recent as possible, but somethings you just have to be there for, ya know. Thanks for reading and see ya later alligator;)
